The sport of snowboarding is one of the hottest winter sports in the world today. Unlike skiing, which involves the use of two thin skis and a set of ski poles to steer and stop, a snowboarder uses one thick ski that they are mounted to sideways, similar to that of a surfboard or skateboard. In addition, snowboarders do not use ski poles, but rather use their arms to balance and their legs to steer and stop. Many of the same sports that are performed using skis have been developed for snowboards. In addition, there are many new and exciting events for competitive snowboarding that have developed only recently, such as freestyle snowboarding and half pipe snowboarding. Many of these new events use similar techniques and maneuvers found in professional skateboarding.
