For the performance in classical and orchestral settings, percussion refers to mallet instruments such as Timpani, Marimba, Xylophone, and Glockenspiel; drums, such as orchestral bass drum and snare drum; crash cymbals; bells, and many extraneous hand-held percussion devices. Technically speaking, the piano is also a percussion instrument, given the fact that piano keys operate mallets that strike the strings of a piano inside, creating musical notes. In any case, students of percussion must often learn not only rhythm techniques, but melody and harmony techniques as well. Contemporary art music features many rhythmically complex pieces that require a great deal of virtuosity and dexterity on the part of percussion players.
