About Harp
The harp is a stringed instrument that is featured in a wide spectrum of musical styles, from classical to folk music. It is one of the most ancient musical instruments in the world. All harps, regardless of their size and shape, feature the same basic design: they are comprised of a neck, resonator, and strings. The strings are organized in courses so that a harp player can play both chords and melodies. The strings can be constructed of wire, gut, nylon, or silk, and, depending of the style of music, generate a wide variety of tones. Particularly in classical music, harps are used to create ethereal sounds, often being featured as solo instruments that provide sweeping glissandos wherein the harp player drags their fingers across a large expanse of strings, creating a cascading note effect.
Harps are used as much in folk music as they are in classical music, and can be found in the folk traditions of Africa, Europe, North, and South America. In addition, some instruments, such as the Aeolian harp and Autoharp, are not authentic harps, since their strings run parallel and not perpendicular to the soundboard. However, all of these instruments use the same harp-like techniques in playing. Regardless of the style of instrument or music you wish to play, working one-on-one with a harp tutor can be a tremendous advantage.
