About Harmonica
The harmonica is a free reed aerophone musical instrument, similar in design to accordions, harmonicas, and reed organs. Its tone is created by blowing air over a series of brass or wooden reeds, known as “combs.” Unlike other free reed instruments that use bellows to create wind, the harmonica uses the breath of the player. Because of this, a harmonica player is able to dynamically change the path of air over the reeds of a harmonica, allowing them to bend certain notes. For this reason, harmonica has been adapted as one of the key instruments in playing blues music as well as American country music, due to the fact that American folk music traditions utilize “blue” notes, which are notes that are “bent” so that they create a unique harmonic dissonance.
There are a wide variety of harmonica variations. The most common model is diatonic, meaning that it is tuned to a specific musical key. More advanced models feature a chromatic tuning, meaning that all twelve notes of our musical system are available to the player. Regardless of which type of harmonica you wish to play, working one-on-one with a harmonica tutor can be a tremendous asset to learning how to master this fascinating musical instrument.
