About Fiddle

The word “fiddle” is another term for a violin. The term is derived from “fiddling,” which is a particular style of playing a violin. The fiddling technique is usually not used in classical music. Rather, fiddling is almost always associated with various types of folk music. The specific technique differs greatly from traditional violin playing as it is found in classical music. Whereas the timbre and tone of a classical violin part is marked by a sweet-sounding vibrato and often only bows on one string at a time, fiddling utilizes a much harsher, shill playing tone and is often played on two or even three strings at a time. A fiddler must learn to incorporate open strings that match the root of the chord they are playing the song’s melody over. In this way, fiddling allows a musician to perform unaccompanied, since the violin plays the melody and a drone note at the same time. Quite often, fiddlers will even sing while playing.

Playing position can also vary greatly among fiddle players. Although in modern times fiddlers now are classically trained, and classical violinists know how to fiddle, much of the older-generation folk music fiddlers of Europe and America were self-taught and, as a result, they were apt to hold the violin bow and the fiddle in unusual ways. In some instances, fiddlers will hold the fiddle against their bicep, as opposed to tucking the instrument under their chin. Regardless of the technique, fiddling is a highly virtuosic style of playing, and requires a great deal of technique. As a result, fiddlers can benefit greatly by working one-on-one with a fiddle tutor.
