About Jazz Dance
No form of dance has pervaded the modern entertainment industry more than jazz dance. While the term is rather general and can account for a wide array of dance techniques, jazz dance generally defined all dance found on Broadway and in films for the vast majority of the 20th century. Even today, jazz dance most often encompasses what is seen to be the dance style of the entertainment industry. The term “jazz dance” came about as a result of the fact that jazz music often comprised the source music for the kind of modern choreographed dance routines that were being featured in film and on stage. Tap dancing became the pinnacle of jazz dance, and today is still regarded as one of the most physically and rhythmically demanding dance styles in the world. During the jazz age, other forms of popular jazz dance styles were developed as well, including the Cakewalk, Black Bottom, Charleston, Jitterbug, Boogie Woogie, and Swing dancing.
Much of the technique associated with jazz dancing comes from other forms of classical dancing, such as ballet and ballroom. Because jazz dancing is centered around a hard, fast-driving jazz beat, strong, sharp movements are required and demand the dancer be in good shape and well trained in classical dance steps. As a result, tutors can be a great benefit to those who hope to become master jazz dancers. A jazz instructor is likely to teach specific jazz steps and techniques, such as the ball change, barrel turn, catch step, jazz walk, pivot step, stag leap, toe rise and touch step. They can also instruct students in other important and related dance styles such as acro, ballet, contemporary, lyrical, and hip hop.
