About Cello
The term “cello” is a shortened term for the Vioncello, one of the most important bowed string instruments in a classical orchestra. The Cello is in the violin family, and is essentially a larger version of the violin that sits between the cellists spread legs by way of a long metal endpin that elevates the instrument off of the ground. The cello is one of the most versatile string instruments, since it is capable of creating deep, mellow, resonant sounds while also climbing up into high registers and performing as a solo instrument. Cellists, therefore, are required to learn a great deal of virtuosic technique in order to be accomplished players: both the left and right hand must learn a variety of methods in order to achieve a beautiful tone and dexterity.
Some left hand techniques include vibrato, harmonics, and glissando, whereas right hand techniques include double stops, pizzicato, col legno, spiccato, and legato. While cellos are most often used in orchestras and chamber music, they are also used occasionally in some popular music as well. For those who wish to learn how to play the cello, it is highly recommended that a student work one-on-one with a cello tutor, who can teach all of these methods.
