About Medical Spanish
The Spanish Language is an Indo-European language and a Romance language that, along with French, Portuguese, Italian, and Romanian, is directly derived from Latin. Spanish developed in the Spanish region of Castile and is sometimes referred to as Castilian, especially when differentiating the Spanish spoken in Spain as opposed to the Spanish spoken elsewhere in the world. Spanish was spread around the globe as a result of the exploration and colonization of the Spanish Empire. Today, the language is spoken in Europe, South America, North America, Asia, and Africa, making it the second most natively spoken language in the world, behind Mandarin Chinese. The Spanish language uses the same type of Latin alphabet as English, and the two languages share some similar words in their vocabularies. In order to master the language, however, students must study the Spanish vocabulary, grammar, syntax, word order, pronunciation, and expressions.
The Spanish language has quickly become one of the most important and widely studied foreign languages in America today, due in large part to the exponential growth of the Hispanic population. As a result, many facets of American society are recognizing the need to address and offer services in the Spanish language, particularly in areas where clear, concise communication is paramount. The medical community, in particular, must have specialists who understand and can communicate complex medical terminology in Spanish. This level of specialization is now being offered at the college level in many language and medical departments. However, although prospective students of Spanish have the opportunity to study the language in colleges and universities, hiring a Spanish language tutor to teach the various study topics can be a great advantage.
